About Ruth Hirschowitz
Born and raised on a remote farm in South Africa, I immigrated to California in 1988. Growing up surrounded by vast landscapes and long periods of solitude taught me to rely on imagination, observation, and an enduring curiosity about the world around me.
My creative journey has taken many forms. Before dedicating myself fully to painting, I worked in both the apparel and interior design industries, experiences that deepened my understanding of color, composition, texture, and the emotional impact of visual storytelling.
I am largely self-taught and approach art as a process of discovery rather than explanation. My work explores memory, human experience, nature, and the subtle connections between people and place. Rather than offering definitive answers, I seek to create space for reflection, inviting viewers to bring their own interpretations and emotions to each piece.
I am drawn to the imperfect, the overlooked, and the layered stories that exist beneath the surface. Through abstraction, figurative work, and mixed media, I explore themes of identity, belonging, vulnerability, resilience, and transformation.
